Clinical and Research Background
Dr. Bryan’s clinical and research interests in clinical pathology focus on integrative infectious disease diagnostics, clinical decision support, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, quality improvement, and laboratory management. Given the large array of infectious disease diagnostics currently available that include traditional culture, serology, histopathology, “classical” molecular tests such as PCR, and next generation sequencing, choosing the right test(s) for the right patient at the right time is becoming increasingly challenging, particularly when cost considerations place financial pressures on institutions. Diagnostic stewardship of tests through individual patient consultations, microbiology plate rounds, educational campaigns, and systematic interventions harnessing the power of electronic order entry all play a role supporting ordering providers and our patients. Expanding beyond clinical microbiology, our clinical laboratories support the care of our patients by integrating all aspects of pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic testing across performing divisions. Effective laboratory management provides leadership for continued quality improvement and a medical interface between our laboratories and all key clinical areas of patient care, whether providers, nursing, facilities, administration, or beyond.
