Clinical and Research Background

Dr. Rhonda Mittenzwei received her medical training at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and completed residency training in both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Duke. After completing fellowships in Neuropathology at the University of Washington (UW) and Forensic Pathology at the King County Medical Examiner’s Office (KCMEO), Dr. Mittenzwei began a joint appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor at UW and as an Associate Medical Examiner at KCMEO. Her research focus is head trauma and its effects, with ongoing projects studying traumatic brain injury including blast injury and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Because there can be multiple coexistent pathologies, Dr. Mittenzwei also studies the intersection between brain injury and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body disease, and vascular pathology, among others.
