Clinical and Research Background
Dr. Phipps is director of Tissue Mass Spectrometry and assistant director of Clinical Chemistry at the University of Washington. His early background includes development of biochemical systems for studying behavior in living cells and work on medical diagnostics for use in challenging environments, e.g. outer space. After obtaining his MD degree from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, he completed a residency in Clinical Pathology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, in Dallas, TX where he was primarily involved with validation and development of mass spectrometry based analyses with application to the clinical laboratory. At UW he continues to focus on mass spectrometry, including on methods to analyze solid organ tissues.
