Collection

Collect 2 LAVENDER TOP (EDTA) tubes with 5 mL blood in each.

Note that this test requires dedicated tubes; samples cannot be shared.

Unacceptable: GREEN TOP (Heparinized) tubes or samples collected in glass tubes.

Expedite transport to the lab.

Outside Laboratories: Test not available through UW DLMP. Arrange for testing directly with WA DOH or the Local Health Jurisdiction.

requested: 2 x 5 mL whole blood EDTA tubes
minimum: 2 x 2 mL whole blood EDTA

Processing

Place unspun whole blood samples in a separate biohazard ziplock bag with absorbent. Store refrigerated.

SPS Note: At order entry, include the comment "POSSIBLE EBOLA" in the modifier for all tests requested.

Prior to sending, confirm approval with the SKPH Epidemiologist at (206) 296-4774 or WPHL Epidemiologist at (206) 418-5500.
Place the order in the WA DOH ETOR (Electronic Test Ordering & Results Portal).
- Manual requisitions are no longer accepted by WAPHL.
Order Test: Rule out Ebola Virus under "WA General Microbiology: Bioterrorism."
Include a note in the order to “page Lab Medicine Resident on-call with results at 206-598-6190."
Forward samples and electronic requisition to UW-MT or HMC Microbiology for packaging/transport (UW-NW: May be packaged by trained SPS staff.)

Transport: Samples must be packaged and transported as Category A (UN 2814 Infectious Substance, Affecting Humans) according to USDOT and IATA regulations by trained staff only. Send samples refrigerated with a copy of the WPHL electronic requisition.
