Description
Clinical Information: Euglobulin clot lysis time (ECLT) provides an overall assessment of the fibrinolysis system by measuring the time for an in vitro clot to dissolve in the absence of the normal plasmin inhibitors. ECLT is used to assess the fibrinolytic system and to monitor patients on urokinase or streptokinase fibrinolytic therapy. More modern alternatives to this assay are the Thromboelastograph (TEG), and specific assays of fibrinolysis such as Tissue Plasminogen Activator (TPA) and Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor (PAI-1).

Ordering & Collection
Specimen Type
Collection
Patient Preparation:
- Prohibit patient from exercising prior to drawing sample.
- To avoid release of plasminogen activator, do not massage vein vigorously, pump fist excessively, or leave tourniquet in place for a prolonged period.
Collect: 5 mL blood in BLUE TOP (Sodium Citrate) tube
Expedite transport to the laboratory. Sample must be processed within 30 minutes of collection.
Handling Instructions
Outside Laboratories: Complete processing within 30 minutes of collection. Centrifuge sample for 10 minutes, remove plasma, and centrifuge plasma for another 10 minutes. Transfer 2 mL platelet-poor plasma (minimum 1 mL) to a separate plastic vial and freeze at -60°C to -80°C. Send frozen on dry ice.
Stability: Frozen (Required): 21 days; Refrigerated: 4 hours; Ambient: 30 minutes.
Reject Due To: Gross hemolysis, lipemia, or icteric. Samples received at room temperature or refrigerated.
Quantity
requested: 2 mL Platelet-Poor Plasma
