Specimen Type

Vagina, Endocervix, Urethra, Throat, Anal, First void urine, Liquid Pap specimen

Collection

Note: Please indicate specimen type with all orders.

  • Endocervical or urethral specimen: Collect specimen with APTIMA UnisexCollection Kit (narrow-tipped blue swab into white tube with purple lettering). Remove cervical mucous with large white swab labeled APTIMA Cleaning Swab and discard before using blue swab to collect specimen. Tubes containing white swabs instead of blue will be rejected for testing. Specimens submitted in the APTIMA Multitest Collection Kit (orange tube with pink swab) will be accepted and performed with a suboptimal comment attached to the result.
  • Vagina: Collect specimen using the APTIMA Multitest Collection Kit (orange tube with pink swab). Specimens submitted in the Aptima Unisex Collection Kit (narrow-tipped blue swab into white tube with purple lettering) will be accepted and performed with a suboptimal comment attached to the result.
  • Throat: Collect specimen using the APTIMA Multitest Collection Kit (orange tube with pink swab). Specimens submitted in the Aptima Unisex Collection Kit (narrow-tipped blue swab into white tube with purple lettering) will be accepted and performed with a suboptimal comment attached to the result.
  • Anal/Rectal: Collect specimen using the APTIMA Multitest Collection Kit (orange tube with pink swab). Avoid collecting stool on the swab. Specimens submitted in the Aptima Unisex Collection Kit (narrow-tipped blue swab into white tube with purple lettering) will be accepted and performed with a suboptimal comment attached to the result.
  • Urine: Collect 10 to 30 mL of first stream of first morning void (Dirty Catch for maximal sensitivity) or first stream at least 1 hour after last void in urine cup. Submit urine cup or transfer 2 mL of urine with the disposable pipette to the yellow tube included in the APTIMA Urine Collection Kit.
  • Liquid Pap Specimen: Transfer PreservCyt Solution liquid Pap specimen into the Aptima Specimen Transfer tube (green label)

Unacceptable specimens: Catheterized urine, frozen urine, or unpreserved urine received >24 hours after collection, gel-based culture swab, Eswab, or any Aptima tube containing the white cleaning swab.

Handling Instructions

Swab or Urine in APTIMA tube: Transport under ambient conditions within 30 days.

  1. Aptima tubes remain stable at both ambient temperature and under refrigeration.
  2. Unpreserved urine samples are acceptable for up to 24 hours, whether stored at ambient temperature or refrigerated.
  3. Once transferred to the Aptima collection kits, specimens are stable for up to 2 months when stored between 2–30 °C


Unpreserved urine: Transport under ambient conditions within 24 hours; specimens received after 24 hours will be rejected.

Alert! Unpreserved urine must be transferred to an APTIMA urine tube within 24 hours of collection.
