Handling Instructions
Send to the laboratory as soon as possible. Note: If nasal wash sample will not arrive in lab within 2 hours, send on ice or cold packs, do NOT freeze.
Quantity
requested: NP swab in 3.0 mL UTM or 1.5 mL nasal wash
minimum: NP swab in 3.0 mL UTM or 1.0 mL nasal wash
Processing
Store specimen at 2 - 8 °C.
HMC SPS: Deliver to Microbiology as STAT on receipt.
UWMC-ML SPS: Deliver to Microbiology as STAT on receipt.
UWMC-NW SPS: Deliver to UA Bench as STAT on receipt.
Stability: Specimen in UTM is stable for up to 24 hours when stored at room temperature or for up to 7 days when stored at 2 - 8°C. Nasal wash specimens not received in the lab within 2 hours after collection should be transported at 2 - 8°C. Transfer 0.6 mL of nasal wash to a UTM tube within 6 hours of collection.
