Description

Reflex to Serotonin Release Assay (code: RSRAG, with additional billing) ONLY when Heparin Induced Platelet Antibody [code: HIPA] is positive or strong positive.

Assay interference: heparin at a level of >1.0 IU/mL in a test sample will interfere with the HIPA assay and will cause false negative results.

Specimen Type

Blood in Citrate Tube (Light Blue Top tube)

Collection

Collect both 3 mL BLUE TOP (CITRATE) tube AND 10 mL RED TOP (plain) tube

BLUE TOP Citrated tube needs to be completely filled, the ratio of blood to anticoagulant is critical for valid coagulation results. After the tube has been filled with blood, immediately invert the tube gently several times to prevent coagulation or formation of clots.

Handling Instructions

Lab must process specimens within 6 hours of collection

Quantity

requested: Processed Sample: 1 mL plasma AND 3 mL of Serum
minimum: 0.5 ml Plasma AND 1mL of Serum

Processing

Take BLUE TOP specimen to Coag to process.

Centrifuge RED TOP and separate serum from CLOT within 6 hours. Send serum to UW Coag Lab for refrigeration.

HMC SPS: send HITRP samples to UW Coag Lab using Delivery Express between 9 - 11 am. After 11 am and before noon call LMR to approve sending HITRP as STAT to UWMC-ML.

Outside Laboratories: Centrifuge BLUE Top Tube for 10 minutes, remove plasma and respin plasma for another 10 minutes. Remove plasma within 6 hours of collection.

Freeze plasma (minimum 0.5 mL) @ -20°C to -80°C. Send Frozen on dry ice.
