Description
This test is for the comparator sample used to evaluate fetal tissue for contamination by maternal cells. It usually consists of a tube of whole blood from the mother; saliva and extracted DNA are also accepted.
Both this test and Maternal Cell Contamination, Fetal [MCC] must be ordered in order for the laboratory to perform maternal cell contamination studies.

Collection
Whole blood:
5 mL LAVENDER TOP tube.
Also acceptable: YELLOW TOP (ACD) tube.
Unacceptable: Heparin green top tubes.
Extracted DNA:
1 ug (concentration >10 ng/uL).
Saliva:
Contact laboratory for validated collection kit.
Forms & Requisitions
Due to the complexity of prenatal testing, consultation with the laboratory is required.

Handling Instructions
Whole blood: Refrigerate up to 1 week.
Extracted DNA: Frozen is preferred. Refrigerated is acceptable.
Saliva: Contact laboratory for a validated collection kit. Keep at room temperature.
Outside Laboratories
Whole blood: Ship at ambient temperature for receipt within 1 week of specimen collection.
Extracted DNA: Ship on a cold pack.
Saliva: Contact laboratory for a validated collection kit. Ship at room temperature.
Quantity
requested: Entire specimen.
minimum: Blood: 1 mL. Extracted DNA: 500 ng. Saliva: Per kit instructions.
