Description
Useful For: Aiding in the diagnosis of non-acute (chronic phase) Chagas disease (T. cruzi).
Ordering Requirements: Orders must be approved by the Laboratory Medicine Resident (LMR) or Microbiology fellow on-call.
Ordering Guidance: The preferred first-line test is Trypanosoma cruzi Antibody Panel (Sendout) [RCRUZI]. If results from the Mayo panel are discordant, this test to ARUP may be used as a tie-breaker, although it is less sensitive than other options. Consider alternative testing available at Eurofins Viracor, with guidance from the LMR or Micro fellow.

Reference Interval: | <=1.0 IV |
Interpretation:
<=1.0 IV: |
Negative - No significant level of Trypanosoma cruzi IgG antibody detected. |
1.1 IV: |
Equivocal - Questionable presence of Trypanosoma cruzi IgG antibody detected. Repeat testing in 10-14 days may be helpful. |
>=1.2 IV: | Positive - IgG antibodies to Trypanosoma cruzi detected, which may suggest current or past infection. |
Interferences and Limitations
Cautions: This assay should not be used for blood donor screening or associated re-entry protocols, or for screening Human Cell and Cellular Tissue-Based Products (HCT/Ps). According to the CDC, at least two different serologic tests should be used to make the laboratory diagnosis of chronic Chagas Disease, as no single serologic test is sufficiently sensitive and specific.
