Description

STAT requests require approval from Lab Med Resident. Increased urinary porphobilinogen concentration in the presence of acute clinical symptoms is consistent with a biochemical diagnosis of acute porphyria, variegate porphyria, or hereditary coproporphyria. RANDOM URINE: STAT specimens do not need preservative if delivered immediately to the laboratory. Protect specimen from light.  

RANDOM URINE: To ROUTINE specimens add approximately 5 g sodium bicarbonate for 30 mL or more urine (1 well rounded tsp). Add less sodium bicarbonate for volumes less than 30 mL. Protect specimen from light.
