Description

Why Attend?

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy: Clinicopathologic Features and Opportunities for Future Research

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is an established neuropathologic entity that has generated renewed interest over the past decade due to reports of CTE in professional American football players, multiple recent high profile documentaries, and a major motion picture on the topic. In contrast to the general impression one gleans from the lay press, the clinical and pathologic features of CTE are not well-defined, and diagnostic criteria are rapidly evolving as a result of markedly increased interest and investment in clinical and basic science research. This presentation will be focused on presenting known, and unknown, clinical and neuropathologic features of CTE. Results from the first Consensus Conference on CTE neuropathology will be discussed, with recommendations for pathology practice-based strategies for diagnosing CTE. Areas in need of further investigation will be described, and opportunities for new knowledge will be presented. Reference PMID: 26667418
