"The Milan System and Ancillary Testing for the Diagnosis of Salivary Gland Tumors"

Salivary gland FNA is one of the most challenging areas of cytopathology. Recently, The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology has been developed to promote uniformity in reporting of salivary gland FNA specimens. The use of the Milan system should facilitate communication across institutions and between pathologists, clinicians and patients with defined risks of malignancy and standardized management approaches associated with each diagnostic category. Furthermore, recent developments in our understanding of the underlying genetic alterations of many salivary gland neoplasms provides the opportunity to refine diagnoses of salivary gland tumors on FNA and limit the use of indeterminate diagnoses.
