Description
Porphobilinogen is enriched by ion exchange chromatography and detected spectrophotometrically following its reaction with Ehrlich's reagent. The reportable range is 0 to 528 mg/L with imprecision 6.8% CV.
Increased urinary porphobilinogen excretion with a history of suggestive clinical symptoms is consistent with a biochemical diagnosis of acute porphyria, variegate porphyria, or hereditary coproporphyria. Porphyria Foundation Website
