Clinical and Research Background
Dr. Lieberman’s clinical interests lie in molecular diagnosis of infections, diagnosis of infections in immunocompromised patients, infectious diseases pathology, and teaching Laboratory Medicine. Josh has been lucky enough to partner with outstanding teachers throughout the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology to explore emerging techniques in teaching pathology, particularly how best to incorporate remote-teaching/remote-learning tools.
In addition to his clinical training in anatomic and clinical pathology, Josh was trained as a microbiologist and biochemist. His PhD focused on the structure and sub-cellular localization of bacterial secretion systems (pilus biogenesis machinery in E. coli). Prior to embracing a primary role as a clinician-educator, Josh spent time conducting post-doctoral research studying the role of nitric oxide in S. aureus metabolism and adaptation to host environments.

Research Interests
Dr. Lieberman’s research interests focus on bringing new and novel molecular assays into the clinical lab. In particular, he is interested in:
- Modalities that span anatomic & clinical pathology and permit species-specific identification of pathogens in tissue such as multiplexed imaging with nucleic acid probes
- Clinical yield and laboratory stewardship of molecular diagnostics, including metagenomic next-generation sequencing assays
