Description
Useful For: This test is used to determine if patient has an acute primary infection. To obtain the rubella immune status of a patient, refer to separate test Rubella Immune Status Viral Serology [RUIS].
Ordering Requirements:
- Pre-approval required. Providers must consult the Local Health Jurisdiction (LHJ) epidemiologist of the patient's county of residence prior to sample submission. LHJ staff must notify Washington State Department of Health (DOH) Office of Communicable Disease Epidemiology (CDE). Samples that arrive at WAPHL without prior approval may be discarded without notice.

Rubella IgM, EIA: Collection & Processing Instructions
Approval Required
Healthcare providers must obtain approval for state lab testing by contacting the Local Health Jurisdiction (LHJ) of the patient's county of residence.
Handling Instructions
Outside Laboratories (Washington State Only):
- Providers must obtain permission from the local county public health epidemiologist prior to submitting a sample. The LHJ epidemiologist will notify the WA DOH CDE. Samples that arrive at WAPHL without approval may be discarded without notice.
- Complete an electronic order in the WA DOH ETOR portal and include a printed copy of the requisition with the sample.
- If sender is unable to complete an electronic order in the portal, the following information is required: ordering provider name and NPI, the name of the epidemiologist approving the request, patient full name, dob, sex, and address.
- Centrifuge sample and aseptically transfer serum to a sterile aliquot within 2 hours of collection. Freeze serum at -20°C while awaiting shipment. Transport on dry ice.
Stability: Refrigerated: 48 hours; Frozen: Acceptable; Ambient: Unacceptable.

Processing
Centrifuge sample and aseptically transfer serum to a sterile aliquot within 2 hours of collection. Refrigerate serum.
- Samples that will not arrive at WAPHL within 48 hours should be frozen at -20°C.
Sendouts:
- Place the order in the WA DOH ETOR (Electronic Test Ordering & Results portal).
- Manual requisitions are no longer accepted by WAPHL.
- Order Test: Rubella IgM, EIA under the WA Virology category.
- Print the resulting requisition and package it with the sample.
- Send samples to WPHL via DLMP or Delivery Express courier.
- If samples will not arrive at WAPHL within 48 hours of collection, they should be frozen at -20°C and transported on dry ice.
