The Anatomic Pathology Service provides diagnostic care for patients who have a wide range of medical disorders. It uses various methods (e.g., gross observations, light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy) to examine specimens removed from patients, then integrates the results of examinations with the knowledge of patient problems and basic human biology to better understand disease processes. Students on this rotation are exposed to all facets of our diagnostic methods.
Each student will be expected to add to his/her general knowledge of human biology and understanding of basic disease processes.
- Use the light microscope to recognize normal tissue structure, recognize basic abnormal changes in common specimen types, and to appreciate both the values and limitations of these diagnostic methods,
- Understand the role of the pathologist and how to best utilize pathology services.
- To have a solid understanding of how malignancies are subclassified, what kind of limitations a pathologist has when making these assessments and to have a better understanding of the progression of disease from dysplasia to invasive disease.
