Residency Program: Application Checklist

In the interest of the health and safety of our communities, we have decided to conduct all interviews virtually for the 2021-2022 season, including for local applicants. This decision is in line with the Coalition for Physician Accountability's reccomendations, which can be viewed here.

This year, we hosted a number of Virtual Open House events to give prospective applicants a chance to meet our Program Directors, faculty & trainees. If you weren’t able to attend, we invite you to view the slides from our presentation and a recording from one of our events.

The University of Washington participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). We only accept applications submitted through ERAS and registered for the NRMP Match. We look for candidates with excellent academic performance and a strong interest in pursuing pathology as the next step in their career. You application wil be considered complete when we receive the following in ERAS:

  2. Curriculum Vitae
  3. Medical School Transcript
  4. MSPE
  5. Personal Statement
  6. USMLE/COMLEX transcript
  7. 3 Letters of Reccomendation
    • We reccomend at least one letter be from a pathologist

For International Medical Graduates (IMGs) an ECFMG certificate is not required to apply to our program, however, you must obtain certification prior to the match in order to be considered for ranking.

Visa Requirements

The UW School of Medicine accepts international medical graduates who meet UW Eligibility and Selection requirements into its accredited residency and fellowship programs. International Medical Graduates requiring visa sponsorship must obtain a J-1 visa sponsored by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). The UW does not generally provide H-1B sponsorship for residents or fellows in its clinical training programs unless the resident/fellow is otherwise ineligible for a J-1 visa. Requests for H-1B visa sponsorship are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and are subject to approval by the UW GME Office and through  International Scholars Operations (ISO) UW Provost's Office. (Complete UW Policy)

We receive approximately 400 applications and interview 60-70 candidates for 6-7 positions each year. Please go to our current resident page on this website for details.
