Residency Program: Rotation Locations
University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC)
UWMC is a 450-bed, tertiary-care referral center and consistently ranks as one of the best U.S. primary-care hospitals by US News & World Report. Patients from across the Pacific Northwest seek its medical expertise; many have rare diseases, uncommon variants of disease, or receive new or unusual treatment modalities. Neonatal intensive care, radiation therapy, artificial dialysis, open heart surgery, an imaging center, multi-organ transplant, and clinical research are major services provided by the hospital. Our staff of pathologists, consultants and residents reviews approximately 150 adult autopsies, 30,220 surgical specimens, 7,500 referrals and consultations, and 3,300 cytogenetic cases each year. Laboratory Medicine clinical services processes in excess of 2.25 million tests annually.
Harborview Medical Center (HMC)
This 413 bed hospital is operated and staffed by the University of Washington Medical School. Their Centers of Emphasis focus on health care resources for neurosciences, trauma, burns, reconstruction and rehabilitation, mentally ill and medically vulnerable, and AIDS/STD patient care. Its Level I adult and pediatric trauma center and regional burn center serves Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. With the completion of the long range capital improvement project there has been substantial expansion of the hospital including Anatomic Pathology and the clinical labs which are located in newly renovated quarters. The hospital houses the cytology laboratory for Harborview and UWMC which processes approximately 27,000 specimens. The King County Medical Examiner’s office, which is located in Harborview, is under the directorship of Dr. Richard Harruff and offers an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Forensic Pathology. Our cytopathology and neuropathology fellowships are located primarily at HMC.
VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VA)
The VA Puget Sound Health Care System is a 291-bed hospital providing tertiary care for veterans from Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Alaska. Pathologists in the Anatomic Pathology Division examine more than 7,400 surgical specimens each year and perform about 60 adult autopsies. The cytopathology service has a volume of approximately 2,000 specimens. The chemistry section performs more than two million tests annually. The staff members integrate service, teaching and research responsibilities and dedicate themselves to various training programs involving pathology residents, surgical residents, and medical students. The general VA patient population emphasizes disorders of the alimentary, cardiovascular, genitourinary, immunohematopoietic, integumentary, and respiratory systems, and the staff pathologists have consequently developed considerable interest and expertise in these areas. The bone marrow transplant patient population provides a rich spectrum of clinicopathologic disorders.
Seattle Children's Hospital (SCH)
This 250-bed University of Washington affiliated hospital is the primary pediatric institution for the City of Seattle and is the main pediatric tertiary care center for the Northwest. It provides a wide variety of specialized clinics and departments for the diagnosis and treatment of infant, childhood and adolescent diseases with approximately 6,000 surgical specimens per year. Major areas of research interest include growth and development, congenital malformations, pediatric malignancies and genetic disorders. CHRMC, along with the UW Department of Lab Medicine and Pathology, sponsors the ACGME-accredited Pediatric Pathology Fellowship Program.
Bloodworks Northwest
Bloodworks Northwest is an independent, volunteer supported, nonprofit regional resource providing blood and tissue services, research and education of high quality and value. It provides transfusion medicine consultation and education to assist physicians and medical staff throughout the region we serve. Its Compatibility Testing Laboratory performs nearly 190,000 crossmatch procedures and the Red Cell Reference Laboratory performs more than 25,000 tests annually.
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (FHCC)
SCCA and Fred Hutch have merged to create Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, a unified adult cancer research and care center that is a clinically integrated part of UW Medicine and UW Medicine’s cancer program. At Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), our sole purpose is the pursuit of better, longer, richer lives for our patients. To deepen our commitment to delivering the highest-quality, most advanced cancer care we have evolved our structure and partnerships to create the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. This unified adult cancer care and research center brings together Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center into a single, independent, nonprofit organization that is also a clinically integrated part of UW Medicine and UW Medicine’s cancer program.
Our residents participate in this mission with rotations in hematology/hematopathology, immunology and transfusion medicine. The hematopathology division of Laboratory Medicine performs more than 650,000 procedures annually. The Hematopathology Fellowship program is also located primarily at FHCC.
