Description

This testing is not intended for the evaluation of suspected sexual abuse or for other medico-legal indications. The performance of this test has NOT been evaluated in patients less than 14 years of age or in pregnant women.

NOTE: A specimen type MUST be provided - correct performance and interpretation of this test is limited to the specimen types and collection methods described in Collection and Handling.

Specimen Type

Vagina, Endocervix, Urethra, Throat, Anal, First void urine,Liquid Pap specimen

Collection

Provide specimen type with all orders:

Endocervical or urethral specimen: Collect using the APTIMA Unisex Swab kit. Collect specimen with narrow-tipped APTIMA swab (labeled APTIMA Unisex Collection Swab); place swab in APTIMA Swab transport tube. (Large swab labeled APTIMA Cleaning Swab is used only to remove excess cervical mucus before collecting specimen with small swab. Discard large swab after cleaning cervix.)

Liquid Pap Specimen: Transfer PreservCyt Solution liquid Pap specimen into the APTIMA Specimen Transfer tube (green label)

Vagina: Collect vaginal specimen using the APTIMA Vaginal Swab Specimen Collection Kit.

Throat: Collect throat/pharynx specimens using the APTIMA Vaginal Swab Specimen Collection Kit.

Anal: Collect anal/rectal specimens using the APTIMA Vaginal Swab Specimen Collection Kit. Avoid collecting stool on the swab.

Urine: Collect first stream of first morning void (Dirty Catch for maximal sensitivity) or first stream at least 1 hour after last void in urine cup. Use disposable pipet in APTIMA urine collection kit to transfer 2 mL to the APTIMA tube, or submit 10 to 30 mL unpreserved urine in urine cup.

Also acceptable: Wait at least 1 hour after last void, then collect first stream urine in urine cup.

Unacceptable specimens: Catheterized urine,Frozen urine, unpreserved urine received >24 hours after collection, gel-based culture swab.

Handling Instructions

Swab or Urine in APTIMA tube: Transport under ambient conditions within 30 days

Unpreserved urine: Transport under ambient conditions within 24 hours; specimens received after 24 hours will be rejected.

Processing

Alert! Unpreserved urine must be transferred to an APTIMA urine tube within 24 hours of collection.
